AP: Tirupati to be developed as a global wedding destination

Vijayawada, Sep 30 (UNI) Tirupati Economic Region (TER) CEO and Revenue–Excise Special Chief Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena on Wednesday said that Tirupati would be developed as a global wedding destination by integrating wedding tourism with its existing religious tourism ecosystem.
Addressing a press conference here, Mukesh Kumar Meena said that weddings could be developed as a major economic activity by bringing accommodation, transport, catering, decoration, event management, photography, traditional arts, entertainment and other services together at a single destination.
Meena said Tirupati had several advantages for development as a City Economic Region, including five National Highway connections, 44 manufacturing units and 14 premier educational institutions, adding that issues relating to power, water and public transport were discussed at the stakeholders’ conference.
“A combination of premium, mid-range and budget-level venues and accommodation could enable families from different sections to organise weddings in Tirupati according to their requirements and affordability. Families and guests attending weddings could be encouraged to stay in Tirupati for two or three days by offering accommodation and tourism packages,” he observed.
Meena said the development of Tirupati as a wedding destination would require adequate accommodation, parking, public transport and connectivity. There was a need to increase the availability of quality budget hotels so that visitors from all sections could stay in the city.
He noted that the objective should be to create facilities catering to people across economic segments, rather than limiting the concept of a wedding destination to premium or luxury events, stating that guests could combine the Tirumala visit with visits to heritage, cultural and nature-based tourist destinations in Tirupati, Chittoor, Nellore and surrounding areas, creating wider tourism circuits.
Meena said pilgrims currently spend an average of around 18 hours in Tirupati and there was a need to increase their stay to two days by developing new tourism products and experiences.
The broader objective was to transform the Tirupati Economic Region, comprising Tirupati, Chittoor and Nellore districts, into an Rs 80-lakh-crore economy by 2047 by integrating industries, tourism, agriculture, logistics and the services sector.
Planning Secretary Ananth Shankar, Tirupati Collector Dr. Venkateswar, Nellore Collector Himanshu Shukla and Chittoor Collector Sumit Kumar also spoke.
