AP: YSRCP attempting to derail local body polls unable to face elections: TDP State Chief

Vijayawada, Oct 21 (UNI) Telugu Desam Party State President Palla Srinivasa Rao has accused the opposition YSRCP of attempting to derail the local body elections due to what he termed was "lack of courage to face elections".
Talking to the media here on Wednesday against the backdrop of YSRCP allegations of the Chandrababu Naidu-led ruling alliance using state machinery to intimidate its prospective candidates and voters, the TDP state Chief slammed the YSRCP for "making efforts to foment tensions at the grassroots level and subsequently approach courts, citing the very same incidents as grounds to halt elections".
He accused former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who had lost public support, of seeking to obstruct elections through legal battles rather than face the electorate. Srinivasa Rao said the YSRCP had approached the courts on issues including the BC reservations and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in an attempt to obstruct local body elections.
“The YSRCP party has sought to put the electoral process on hold through around 60 petitions. A political party should seek public support by reaching out to the people rather than attempting to stall elections through legal disputes,” he asserted.
“The responsibility for deciding on an extension of the deadline rested with the State Election Commission (SEC) and that the TDP has no role in the matter. Judicial directions must be respected, and there was no justification for creating unnecessary political controversies over court orders,” he observed.
Srinivasa Rao said the TDP had anticipated attempts to obstruct the local body election process in the erstwhile Kadapa district. Referring to developments in Rajampet, Yerraguntla, Kadapa, Rayachoti, Kamalapuram, Pulivendula, Proddatur and Mydukur, he lashed out that the YSRCP group was seeking political mileage by fomenting tensions during the election period.
He accused its leaders of devising strategies from Bengaluru and bringing people from other areas to create unrest. Creating tensions on the ground and then portraying the incidents as evidence of widespread violence across the State was an attempt to mislead the public, he said.
Srinivasa Rao called upon TDP leaders and cadres to remain vigilant and counter the alleged high-handedness of the YSRCP through democratic means and affirmed that the Naidu government was committed to ensuring free and fair local body elections while giving due recognition to leaders and workers who had worked hard for the party.
