AP: YSRCP Doctors Wing voices concern over deaths of medical students

Vijayawada, Oct 1 (UNI) YSRCP NTR District Doctors Wing Chairman Dr. Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav today expressed deep concern over the repeated deaths of medical students in Andhra Pradesh and questioned the effectiveness and independence of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) as the regulator of affiliated medical institutions.
The recent deaths of Dr. P. Sailaja, final-year MD General Medicine, and Y. Sravani, first-year PG ENT, at Andhra Medical College within five days has once again exposed the serious pressures confronting medical students. Authorities have initiated inquiries into both cases.
These incidents cannot be viewed in isolation. Earlier deaths involving MBBS and BDS students across Andhra Pradesh have also been publicly reported. The circumstances of individual cases differ, but the recurrence of such tragedies demands a comprehensive institutional review.
The National Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being of Medical Students, constituted by the National Medical Commission, has already laid down recommendations addressing the mental health and welfare of medical students. NTRUHS itself announced a suicide-prevention and mental-health training programme in January 2026, specifically stating that it would cover both government and private medical colleges.
The recent DME directions for government medical colleges prescribe limits of 24 hours of continuous duty, 74 hours per week, a weekly day off and post-night-duty rest. The University must clarify what equivalent, enforceable mechanism is being used to ensure that students in affiliated private colleges receive the same protection.
Dr. Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav said: “Every student death must lead to institutional learning, corrective action and accountability,” adding that the State cannot afford a regulatory system that becomes visible only after tragedy.
The YSRCP Doctors Wing demanded a comprehensive white paper from NTRUHS on medical and dental student deaths, suicide attempts, grievances, counselling and corrective action from 2025 onwards, immediate implementation of the National Task Force recommendations in every affiliated government and private medical college, with institution-wise timelines and compliance reports, a transparent audit of PG working hours, duty rosters, leave and post-night-duty rest in all affiliated colleges, particularly private institutions and an independent inspection of private medical colleges to verify whether safeguards exist on the ground rather than merely in institutional records.
