Arshdeep, Gurnoor shine as India bowl out NZ for 185 in first ODI

Auckland, Nov 4 (UNI) India bowled out New Zealand for 185 in 40.2 overs in the first ODI of the five-match series at Eden Park here on Wednesday, with Arshdeep Singh claiming four wickets and Gurnoor Brar producing an impressive three-wicket haul.
Arshdeep returned figures of 4 for 70 in 10 overs, while Gurnoor took 3 for 44 in 9.2 overs. Anshul Kamboj provided excellent support with 2 for 22 in his 10 overs as the India bowlers kept the hosts under pressure.
New Zealand, after opting to bat, got off to a shaky start, losing Will Young (9) in the fifth over when Arshdeep had him caught by Shreyas Iyer.
Tim Seifert and Henry Nicholls attempted to rebuild the innings, but India missed an early opportunity when Naman Dhir dropped a straightforward catch at mid-wicket off Auqib Nabi's bowling in the fourth over. Seifert, who was yet to open his account, mistimed a heave across the line, but Dhir failed to hold on.
Axar Patel also failed to complete a difficult chance at backward point in the seventh over when Nicholls edged an Arshdeep delivery towards him. Axar dived full length to his left and managed to get a hand to the ball but could not hold on.
Arshdeep, however, struck in the ninth over, dismissing Nicholls (9), caught by Naman Dhir at mid-wicket.
Seifert played an aggressive knock of 38 off 43 balls, including three fours and two sixes, before Gurnoor ended his resistance with a short delivery that was caught by substitute fielder Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Gurnoor produced another impressive moment when he took a spectacular one-handed catch off his own bowling to dismiss New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham for three, leaving the hosts struggling at 84 for four.
Daryl Mitchell made 28 off 41 balls but was run out following sharp fielding by Rohit Sharma and quick work behind the stumps by KL Rahul.
Kamboj then struck twice, dismissing Mitchell Santner (4) and Nathan Smith (1). The dismissal of Santner was particularly unusual, with the ball deflecting off the inside edge and travelling between his legs before rolling back onto the stumps.
Virat Kohli produced a brilliant low diving catch at second slip to dismiss Nathan Smith off Kamboj.
Glenn Phillips offered some resistance with 30 off 51 balls before Arshdeep removed him, caught by Shreyas Iyer at mid-off. Arshdeep also dismissed Kyle Jamieson (1), caught by Kohli, to complete his four-wicket haul.
New Zealand's lower order, however, managed a late flourish through Blair Tickner, who smashed 34 off just 23 balls, including one four and four sixes. He particularly targeted Arshdeep, hitting three sixes in the 38th over as the Indian pacer missed his yorker length.
Gurnoor eventually ended Tickner's counterattack, having him caught by KL Rahul in the 41st over to wrap up the New Zealand innings.
Jacob Duffy remained unbeaten on 15 as the hosts were dismissed for 185. Auqib Nabi went wicketless in his six overs, conceding 33 runs. India now need 186 runs to win the opening ODI and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Brief Score: New Zealand 185 all out in 40.2 overs (Tim Seifert 38, Blair Tickner 34, Glenn Phillips 30; Arshdeep Singh 4/70, Gurnoor Brar 3/44, Anshul Kamboj 2/22). India need 186 runs to win.
