Arunachal: Congress slams BJP’s ‘Black Day’ protest

Itanagar, June 25 (UNI) The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) observance of a so-called ‘Black Day’ on Wednesday, June 25, calling it a “theatrical display of hypocrisy” and an attempt to deflect attention from the ongoing "erosion" of democratic values under the NDA rule at the Centre.
In a strongly worded statement, APCC President Bosiram Siram described the current political environment in India as an "Undeclared Emergency 11", marking eleven years and thirty days of what it called a five-fold assault on the Constitution, democratic institutions, civil liberties, and media freedom.
“The real Black Day for India’s democracy is not in the past—it is happening now, every day, under BJP rule,” the APCC chief said, accusing the BJP of "undermining" Parliament, "misusing" central agencies, "stifling" dissent, and "eroding" the independence of key institutions including the Election Commission, CAG, and the judiciary.
APCC further criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for a “400-plus mandate” to potentially alter the Constitution, which the Congress claims was a "betrayal" of Dr BR Ambedkar’s legacy. It noted that the people of India rejected this agenda by voting to preserve the existing constitutional framework.
Citing" misuse" of the Governor’s office, fiscal centralisation, tax intimidation, and partisan use of enforcement agencies, the APCC also accused the BJP of "promoting a divisive rhetoric and targeting minorities, Dalits, and civil society voices". The statement highlighted the alarming rise in hate speech, suppression of farmers’ protests, and manipulation of media narratives using public funds.
Touching upon Arunachal Pradesh’s political history, the APCC reminded citizens of the 2016 mass defection episode engineered by the BJP to topple the elected Congress government—labeling it a "direct attack" on the democratic mandate of the people.
Reaffirming its commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and development, the APCC said: “Democracy is not just about remembering the past — it’s about protecting the present and securing the future.”
“The Congress party remains dedicated to addressing the real issues facing our state—be it infrastructure development, employment generation, or safeguarding our cultural and strategic interests in this sensitive border region,” Siram added. UNI TD SSP
