Arunachal Dy CM calls for boosting GST compliance, revenue collection

Itanagar, June 12 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who also holds the Finance, Tax, Excise & Narcotics portfolios, directed officials to chalk out strategies to enhance GST compliance and revenue collection.

Chairing a review meeting of the Department of Tax, Excise & Narcotics on Thursday to assess the department’s performance, the Deputy CM emphasized bringing all eligible businesses, especially hotels, restaurants, and resorts, within the ambit of mandatory GST registration.

He directed the Department to conduct targeted awareness drives in partnership with the Arunachal Chamber of Commerce & Industries (ACCI), aimed at educating businesses about the benefits of GST registration and compliance.
Mein further called for a monthly review of the Department’s performance, with a focus on improving compliance and boosting revenue collection.
Highlighting the transformative impact of GST, he noted that the reform has simplified indirect taxation by unifying various state and central taxes into a single tax structure, reducing tax burden, and enabling a seamless national market.
Since Arunachal Pradesh adopted the GST regime on July 1, 2017, the number of registered taxpayers has surged from 7,365 in the financial year 2017-18 to 18,477 in the current fiscal, marking a growth of nearly 151 percent.
GST revenue collections have also shown significant improvement, rising from Rs 227.94 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 1,825.87 crore in FY 2024-25, reflecting improved compliance and a broader tax base. In the Excise sector, the department’s revenue rose to Rs 299.36 crore in 2024-25, which is a 46.62 percent increase over the previous fiscal year.
To support taxpayers and curb fraudulent practices, the Department has operationalised 16 GST Seva Kendras (GSKs) across key locations. These centres are equipped with biometric systems for Aadhaar-based authentication and physical premise verification to prevent fraudulent registrations.
Mein reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising tax administration, enhancing transparency, and fostering a tax-compliant ecosystem for sustained growth and development.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Commissioner (Finance, Tax, Excise & Narcotics) YW Ringu, Commissioner (CGST & CX) Shyam Kanu Mahanta, Commissioner (Tax, Excise & Narcotics) Lobsang Tsering, Advisor to Deputy CM, Captain Anupam Tangu, ACCI President Tarh Nachung, and Arunachal Tax Consultant Federation President Tarak Eha, among others.
