Arunachal: Flash floods wreak havoc in Upper Subansiri; over 80 houses damaged

Itanagar, May 30 (UNI) Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have caused widespread damage in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, with over 80 RCC and semi-RCC houses affected after the Sigin River overflowed on Thursday.
The worst-hit areas include Polo Colony, Sigum Rijo, Sigin, and Bukpen Colony, officials said on Friday.
Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo, along with ADC Biaro Sorum and other officials, visited the affected sites to assess the ground situation.
In response to the worsening conditions, the DC has issued a prohibitory order, urging residents in vulnerable zones to remain alert and shift to safer locations to protect life and property.
All concerned departments, including the police and disaster response teams, have been placed on high alert and asked to maintain readiness for any emergency situations. Relief and rescue operations are underway as the district administration continues to monitor the situation closely.
In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Arunachal Pradesh, forecasting widespread rainfall activity from May 30 to 31 under the influence of a depression currently lying over Bangladesh.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places across the state, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at several locations. Isolated areas may also witness extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, posing potential risks of flooding and landslides in vulnerable regions.
In the past 24 hours, several areas have already received significant rainfall. The highest recorded was in Bomdila (West Kameng) with 10 cm, followed by 8 cm each in Daporijo (Upper Subansiri), Kaying (West Siang), Khimiyang (Changlang), and Anjaw district.
Authorities have urged residents, especially those in low-lying or disaster-prone areas, to remain alert and take necessary precautions. The situation is being closely monitored as emergency services remain on standby.
