Arunachal Guv calls for united effort against plastic pollution

Itanagar, June 5 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik led the World Environment Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan, Itanagar, on Wednesday, calling for urgent and united action to protect the environment and combat plastic pollution.
Marking the occasion, the Governor planted Maha Neem saplings in the northern lawn of the Raj Bhavan and appealed to citizens to adopt simple, eco-friendly practices in daily life. He urged people to replace plastic with cloth and biodegradable alternatives, segregate household waste, recycle responsibly, organize community clean-up drives, and educate the younger generation about environmental stewardship.
Referring to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s national campaign, ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’, the Governor encouraged citizens to say a firm “No” to single-use plastics. He urged everyone to unite in building a cleaner, greener, and plastic-free Arunachal Pradesh.
He also highlighted five key pillars of the campaign: spreading awareness about the hazards of plastic pollution, reducing dependence on single-use plastics, improving plastic waste management systems, promoting sustainable alternatives, and encouraging eco-friendly lifestyles.
Interacting with Raj Bhavan officials and Forest Department staff, the Governor appreciated their efforts in maintaining the greenery of the estate. On the occasion, Er Heni Basar, Forester from Ita-Park Range under the Social Forestry Division, was felicitated for his exemplary efforts in landscape design and upkeep of Raj Bhavan’s flower beds and golf course.
In a message marking World Environment Day, Chief Minister Pema Khandu invoked traditional wisdom to confront today’s environmental challenges.
“Our ancestors lived in harmony with nature, treating every river, tree, and mountain as sacred. As we now face the growing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, it is time to draw strength from that wisdom,” he stated in a social media post.
CM Khandu called upon citizens to reaffirm their commitment to preserving ecosystems through daily actions — planting trees, conserving water, and reviving indigenous practices. “Let’s be the generation that chooses sustainability over convenience, and harmony over exploitation,” he said.
