Odisha to promote use of biotechnology applications across various sectors

Bhubaneswar, June 6 (UNI) The Odisha Cabinet on Friday approved the ‘Development of Biotechnology’ scheme to foster collaboration between industry, academia, and research.
This initiative aims to benefit society and unlock vast opportunities for biotechnology applications across various sectors.
Briefing newsmen after the cabinet meeting, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja said the scheme will be implemented for five years, starting from the financial year 2025-26 to 2029-30, with an estimated cost of Rs.1,113.50 crore.
He noted that Odisha is endowed with one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country and has
all the necessary ingredients to sustain and promote biotechnology for the welfare of society.
The natural resources for comprehensive bioprospecting and the available manpower in Odisha remain largely untapped, he added.
Recognizing this immense potential, the Odisha government has identified biotechnology as a thrust sector in its Industrial Policy Resolution (IPR), 2022.
This sector, the Chief Secretary said, will require a skilled workforce, research and innovation, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and targeted incentives for industries, startups, and incubators.
The scheme will open vast opportunities for biotechnology applications in industry, agriculture, medicine, and the environment.

With the Odisha Biotechnology Policy 2024 already in place, the scheme will provide incentives to develop advanced infrastructure for product and service development.
This will help position Odisha as a knowledge-driven bio-economy and contribute significantly to the state’s overall economic growth.
The objective of the scheme, which is an umbrella program comprising 17 sub-schemes, is to promote higher education, research, and infrastructure development in the most promising areas
of biotechnology.
It will develop and strengthen a supportive and vibrant ecosystem for the “5 Is” – Innovation, Incubation, Investment, Income, and Impact – to build enterprises and industries.
The scheme, Ahuja said, will also promote product and process development, commercialization,
and IP monetization. It aims to leverage breakthrough biotechnology innovations and knowledge
for the socio-economic development of the state.
Additionally, it will realign academic excellence, skilling, and capacity-building efforts to meet industry requirements, the Chief Secretary said.
