West Kameng Police bust fake Inner Line Permit racket; Govt employee arrested

Itanagar, June 6 (UNI) In a major breakthrough, the West Kameng District Police has successfully busted a fake Inner Line Permit (ILP) racket, arresting a key accused, a senior officer said on Friday.
The crackdown comes after intensified ILP verification at Bhalukpong check gate carried out on June 4, during which several forged ILPs bearing the seal and signature of the Tawang Circle Officer were detected.
Upon verification, the concerned Circle Officer confirmed the signature and seal were forged, and no corresponding records existed in the CO’s office.
Subsequently, a case of cheating and forgery was registered at Bhalukpong Police Station under Sections 318(1)(2)(3)(4)/336(1)(2)(3)(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation was entrusted to Sub-Inspector Gagam Aje.
Acting swiftly, the Bhalukpong police team comprising SI Gagam Aje, ASI T Tsering, and constables T Sallang, T Natung, and Ct Dvr G Naloiju, led by Inspector Thumgon Tali (OC) and under the overall guidance of SP Sudhanshu Dhama, in-charge SP of Bichum, Pawan Kumar Yadav, and DySP (HQ) K Lingo, conducted a raid in Tezpur, Assam.
The team arrested one Ashish Ghosh (30), a resident of Garwanpatty area of Tezpur, along with recoveries of important evidence.
Notably, the accused is an Assam government employee, serving as an Information Assistant in the District Disaster Management Authority, Sonitpur.
A self-taught computer expert, Ghosh holds a Diploma in Computer Application (DCA) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA).
He was found to have been forging ILPs for several years, operating discreetly.
In the last 2–3 months alone, he had reportedly produced over 1,300 fake ILPs, forging seals and signatures of the East Administrative Circle Bhalukpong and Tawang Circle Officer, and issuing ILPs in both online and offline formats.
During the raid, police recovered several incriminating items used in the production of fake ILPs: one laptop, four hard disks, 10 pen drives, one mobile phone, nine ATM cards, four cheque books, bank passbooks, and Rs 13,000 in cash.
Ashish Ghosh was formally arrested on June 5 and remanded to police custody for further interrogation. The investigation is ongoing, and police are probing possible wider linkages and accomplices in the racket, the SP said.
