Arunachal: Power relief for FTI as Govt acts to resolve student issues

Itanagar, May 23 (UNI) In a move aimed at alleviating the ongoing difficulties faced by students of the Film & Television Institute (FTI), Arunachal Pradesh, the state government's Department of Power has granted permission to the premier school to share the express power line of NIT Jote for a year.
Executive Engineer (Electrical) Rajesh Dawe informed that a No Objection Certificate (NoC) has been signed to this effect, ensuring more stable power supply and fewer outages. He however, advised the Institute to apply for an express line of its own for a seamless power supply.
The decision was made during a high-level stakeholder meeting convened by Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Jiken Bomjen at the conference hall of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Papunallah, Naharlagun on Friday. The meeting was held to address the grievances raised by students regarding poor infrastructure facilities at FTI, Jote.
DC Bomjen directed the Sangdupota Circle Officer Limpi Rallen to oversee law and order issues related to the FTI campus. He also proposed the creation of an ex-officio post for the DC, Yupia, to make the office accountable for local matters concerning FTI. Additionally, he proposed appointment of a Public Relations Officer to liaise with locals, departments, and CPWD, and assigning a Legal Standing Counsel to manage legal affairs for the institute.
Addressing infrastructure concerns, the DC urged the Executive Engineer of the PHE Department to find a temporary solution to the issue of debris falling from the under-construction Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which has been obstructing the main road between the residential quarters and classrooms, severely hampering student mobility.
On construction progress, CPWD Executive Engineer Devesh Budhani assured that the Classroom Theatre (CRT) building—which includes performance labs—will be handed over by May 31, 2025. He further committed that the girls’ hostel will be ready by June 15, after which the Sound Studio and Preview Theatre will become the next priorities.
Chief Academic Coordinator of FTI, Bishnu Dev Halder earlier briefed the gathering about daily challenges faced by students, including irregular power supply, lack of clean water, and poor road conditions, which have significantly disrupted academic and campus life.
Executive Engineer of the PHE Department, Ngurang Niya informed the house that the construction of the Water Treatment Plant is 70–80% complete, and a temporary lift water system is currently operational. However, he informed that the early advent of monsoon has affected the work of WTP and water supply.
Earlier, Director of Information and Public Relations, Gijum Tali, while expressing disappointment over the sluggish pace of CPWD works, urged for better coordination between SRFTI (Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute), CPWD and the contractors. He also expressed solidarity with the FTI students, acknowledging their ongoing hardships.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Registrar of FTI, CO Sangdupota, Assistant Engineer from Rural Works Department, and other officers from the Department of Information and Public Relations.
