Ashoka challenges Shivakumar to show voter deleted through Form 7

Bengaluru, Oct 1 (UNI) Leader of Opposition R Ashoka on Thursday challenged Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to produce even a single voter whose name was allegedly deleted from the electoral rolls through a Form 7 application, questioning the Congress government's claim of largescale voter deletions.
“Bring even one person whose name has been deleted through Form 7 and show us. Show who submitted the application and why the name was deleted,” Ashoka said at a press conference here.
Ashoka said the State government had alleged that 15 lakh names were sought to be deleted through Form 7 applications, but claimed that the actual number of such applications across Karnataka was only around 25,000.
“All these applications have been submitted by Congress, Janata Dal, BJP and the general public. Where does the figure of 15 lakh come from?” he asked.
He challenged Shivakumar to identify the voters whose names had actually been deleted and establish who had filed the Form 7 applications against them.
“If you have the courage, bring them before the public. Show us one name deleted through Form 7 and tell us whether the application was submitted by the BJP or Janata Dal,” he said.
The BJP leader said filing a Form 7 application did not automatically result in deletion of a voter's name, as the Election Commission was required to verify the objection before taking a decision.
“According to my information, the Election Commission is still verifying the Form 7 applications. Nothing has been deleted yet,” he said.
Ashoka said bulk applications submitted in Belagavi and Veerabhadra Nagar had been rejected as mass applications, and maintained that the government should approach the Election Commission or courts with documentary evidence if it believed eligible voters had been wrongly removed.
“Who gave you the authority to say ‘delete it’ after Form 7 is submitted? The Election Commission is a constitutional body. Anyone can apply, but whether to delete or retain a name is for the Election Commission to decide after investigation,” he said.
He said the BJP supported protection of every eligible voter's right to vote but insisted that duplicate or ineligible entries should be subjected to verification.
“If a person is enrolled in four or five places, the names have to be deleted. If they are enrolled in only one place, how will the Election Commission delete them?” he asked.
