Asian Games Day 5: Roshibina, mixed relay silver and three bronzes take India’s tally to 17

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) Naorem Roshibina Devi and India’s mixed 4x400m relay quartet won silver medals, while Seema Kumari (women’s 10000m), the men’s skeet shooting team of Anantjeet Singh Naruka-Parinaaz Dhaliwal and the men’s double sculls pair of Satnam Singh and Salman Khan added bronze medals as India enjoyed a productive Day 5 at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Thursday.
India’s medal tally has now increased to 17, including one gold, seven silvers and nine bronze medals.
Roshibina, a late replacement in the Indian team, went down 0-2 to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the women’s 60kg wushu sanda final to complete a historic hat-trick of Asian Games medals. The 25-year-old from Manipur had won bronze at Jakarta 2018 and silver at Hangzhou 2022, becoming the first Indian wushu player to medal at three successive editions.
Later in the evening session, Manu TS, Poovamma MR, Vishal TK and Vithya Ramraj clocked 3:14.46 to win silver in the mixed 4x400m relay.
Moments earlier, Seema Kumari won India’s first women’s 10,000m medal at the Asian Games in 16 years, clocking 32:50.05 to finish third behind Bahrain’s gold medallist Winfred Yavi (32:39.18) and Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka (32:41.54), who took silver.
Earlier in the day, Satnam Singh and Salman Khan provided another highlight by winning India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the men’s double sculls. The pair clocked 6:13.25 at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course, staying second until the 1,500m mark before slipping to third in the final 500m. China’s Yi Xudi and Yide Nie won gold in 6:09.37, while Uzbekistan’s Pavel Sorin and Mekhrojbek Mamatkulov took silver in 6:10.49. The bronze was Satnam’s second Asian Games medal after his bronze in the men’s quadruple sculls at Hangzhou, while Salman won his maiden medal.
In shooting, Anantjeet and Parinaaz won bronze in the mixed skeet team event after hitting 44 of 48 targets. They finished level with South Korea but lost the tie-break, while China took gold.
It was the second medal of the Games for both shooters after they had earlier won bronze in the men’s and women’s skeet team events, respectively.
India also assured itself of a squash medal after Anahat Singh and Tanvi Khanna set up an all-Indian women’s singles quarterfinal. Anahat beat Singapore’s Au Yeong Wai Iynn 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-7), while Tanvi overcame Au Yeong Wai Yhann 3-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-5, 13-11).
The winner will enter the semifinals and secure a medal. In the men’s event, Veer Chotrani edged Malaysia’s Sanjay Jeeva 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 15-17, 11-6), while Abhay Singh beat Sri Lanka’s Ravindu Laksiri 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-6) to reach the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, defending champions India maintained their winning run in men’s hockey with an 8-2 victory over South Korea. Dilpreet Singh and Abhishek scored twice each, while Shilanand Lakra, Sukhjeet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Rajinder Singh completed the tally. India top Pool A with nine points from three wins and face Japan on Saturday.
The men’s and women’s kabaddi teams also completed unbeaten group campaigns. The men defeated Chinese Taipei 37-21 to top Group A, while the women beat hosts Japan 50-25. Both teams advanced to Friday’s semifinals.
In athletics, Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh also advanced to the men’s 100m semifinals. However, it was heartbreak for Asha Ilango, who finished fourth in the women’s triple jump with 13.83m, while Pooja and Anamika were eighth and ninth, respectively, after three events in the heptathlon.
The boxing contingent endured heartbreaks as Games debutant and Commonwealth Games champion Sakshi Chaudhary went down 2-3 to Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the women’s 51kg pre-quarterfinals, while Sumit Kundu retired injured with a knee problem during his 70kg bout.
There was some good news as Parveen advanced to the women’s 65kg quarterfinals after receiving a walkover against Tajikistan’s Malika Nozimova. She will face Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova.
In canoe sprint, Parvathy Geetha and Prasanna Kumar reached the mixed kayak doubles 500m semifinals, while Harshwardhan Shaktawat advanced to the men’s kayak singles 500m semifinals.
In esports, Paritosh progressed to the next round of Puyo Puyo Champions after finishing third in Group B with two wins and two losses.
Rowing also saw India’s lightweight men’s double sculls pair of Ujjwal Kumar Singh and Rohit finish fourth in 6:27.42, while the men’s quadruple sculls crew of Arvind Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Navdeep Singh and Jakar Khan finished fifth in 5:52.17.
In fencing, Olympian Bhavani Devi lost 5-15 to world silver medallist Rao Xueyi in the women’s sabre round of 16, while Shreya Gupta was beaten 6-15 by Paris Olympics silver medallist Jeon Ha-young.
India’s lone gymnast Pranati Nayak endured a sixth finish in the women’s vault final with 13.100 points.
