Asian Games: Joshna-Velavan battle past compatriots into mixed doubles quarters

Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 24 (UNI) Veteran Indian squash players Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar held their nerve in a fiercely contested second game to defeat compatriots Suraj Chand and Shameena Riaz 2-0 and storm into the mixed doubles quarterfinals at the Asian Games here on Thursday.
The third-seeded Indian pair prevailed 11-7, 11-10 in an all-Indian Round of 16 clash, with the second game providing the decisive test of their composure.
Joshna and Velavan looked in control after taking the opening game 11-7, but Suraj and Shameena mounted a strong fightback in the second. The ninth-seeded pair recovered from 7-9 down to level the game at 9-9, before Joshna and Velavan held their nerve to close out the match 11-10.
The victory sets up a quarterfinal against the Philippines' David Pelino and Jemyca Aribado on Friday.
The Indian duo had entered the tournament as the third seeds, while Suraj and Shameena were seeded ninth, making the Round of 16 an unfortunate all-Indian encounter.
For Joshna, the campaign carries added significance as she is making her seventh consecutive Asian Games appearance, extending her record as India's most experienced participant at the continental multi-sport event.
The veteran has been a key figure in India's squash campaign at the Asian Games, while Velavan has emerged as one of the country's prominent men's players.
With the mixed doubles event now moving into the last eight, Joshna and Velavan will look to build on their hard-fought opening victory and keep India's medal hopes alive in squash.
