Satnam-Salman script rowing history with maiden Asian Games double sculls bronze

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 24 (UNI) Satnam Singh and Salman Khan etched their names in Indian rowing history, powering the country to its maiden Asian Games medal in the men’s double sculls with a hard-fought bronze here on Thursday.
The Indian pair clocked 6:13.25 in a fiercely contested final, staying in medal contention throughout before being edged into third place in the closing stages.
China’s Yi Xudi and Yide Nie claimed gold in 6:09.77, while Uzbekistan’s Pavel Sorin and Mekhrojbek Mamatkulov took silver in 6:10.49.
India made an aggressive start and occupied second position at the 500m mark. Satnam and Salman maintained their challenge through the middle stages and were still second at 1,000m and 1,500m.
With the Chinese crew setting the pace at the front, India appeared on course for a silver before Uzbekistan surged in the final 500 metres. The Indian pair fought to stay in the medal positions but ultimately finished third.
The bronze nevertheless marked a breakthrough for Indian rowing, with the country securing its first Asian Games medal in the men’s double sculls.
For Satnam, the medal was his second successive Asian Games podium finish. He had been part of India’s bronze-winning men’s quadruple sculls crew at the Hangzhou Games in 2023.
Salman, meanwhile, celebrated his maiden Asian Games medal after a journey that began with his induction into rowing through the Bombay Engineer Group of the Indian Army in 2018.
Satnam had switched to rowing from handball and went on to establish himself on the national and international circuit. He represented India at the 2018 Youth Olympics and later won the men’s single sculls title at the Senior National Rowing Championships.
The Indian pair’s performance added a historic dimension to India’s rowing campaign at Aichi-Nagoya, with Satnam’s experience and Salman’s perseverance combining to deliver a first-of-its-kind Asian Games medal in the event.
