Asian Games teqball: Quimcy loses semifinal, to fight for historic bronze

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) India’s Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza stayed in the hunt for a historic Asian Games medal despite losing 1-2 to Indonesia's Ima Sumaya in the women's singles semifinal at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center on Saturday.

The 24-year-old, making her Asian Games debut, started on a strong note and took the opening set 12-7. Sumaya, however, responded in the second set, recovering from an early deficit to take the lead and eventually win it 12-9, forcing the contest into a decider.

Quimcy again made a positive start in the third set, moving 3-0 ahead before extending her advantage to 4-1. Sumaya then turned the match around, taking control of the decider and
winning it 12-7 to book her place in the final.

Quimcy will now face World No 7 Yuina Sakamoto in the bronze medal match on Sunday. A win would give India its first-ever teqball medal at the Asian Games.

Quimcy had earned her semifinal spot after topping Group A with two wins in her debut appearance at the continental showpiece. She began her campaign with an impressive 2-1 victory over top-seeded Japan's Yuina Sakamoto. After losing the opening set 10-12, the Indian fought back to win the second 12-11 and then edged the deciding set 13-11.

She followed that with another strong performance against Cambodia's Koemyean DY, winning 12-9, 12-7 in straight sets. The result took Quimcy to the top of Group A and secured her a direct passage to the semifinals, allowing her to avoid the quarterfinals.

Quimcy has also competed in the mixed doubles event alongside Mohamed Anas Imran Beg. The Indian pair defeated the Philippines' Jhoana Abulencia and Prince Agustin in their Group A opener.
