Asian TT c’ships: Harmeet-Yashaswini end 72-year wait for mixed doubles medal

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade ended India’s 72-year wait for a mixed doubles medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships after reaching the semifinals of the 2026 edition in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, today.
The Indian pair, ranked 26th in the world, went down 0-3 (9-11, 9-11, 8-11) to Japan’s ninth-ranked Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto in the semifinals. However, their place in the last four had already guaranteed them at least a bronze medal, marking India’s return to the mixed doubles podium at the continental championships for the first time since 1954.
India’s previous medals in the event came in 1952, when Gool Nasikwala and Kalyan Jayant won gold, and in 1954, when Yatin Vyas and Meena Parande claimed silver.
Harmeet and Yashaswini secured their historic medal after a hard-fought 3-2 quarterfinal victory over South Korea’s Park Gang-hyeon and Lee Daeun. After winning the opening game 11-6, the Indians dropped the next two 8-11, 8-11 but recovered to take the fourth 11-9 before clinching the decider by the same margin.
The pair had begun their campaign with a first-round bye before beating Indonesia’s Muhammad Negara and Citra Rasmi 3-0 (14-12, 12-10, 11-7). They then overcame Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Hsien-chia and Wu Ying Syuan 3-1 (11-6, 12-10, 11-13, 11-7) to advance to the quarterfinals.
The other Indian mixed doubles combination of Payas Jain and Syndrela Das bowed out in the quarterfinals. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Payas and Syndrela registered straight-game wins over Uzbekistan’s Shokhrukh Iskandarov and Arujan Kamalova, and Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Guan-Hong and Yeh Yi-tian.
Their run ended against China’s Huang Youzheng and Chen Yi, who secured a 3-0 victory to advance to the semifinals.
