Table Tennis: Harmeet-Yashaswini win historic bronze at Asian Championships

Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Oct 23 (UNI) India’s Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade won a historic bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships 2026 here on Friday.

Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade, 26th in the mixed doubles table tennis rankings, lost 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-8) to world No. 9 Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto of Japan in the semi-finals.
However, by reaching the semi-finals, the duo had already assured themselves of a medal, ending India's 72-year wait for a mixed doubles podium finish at the Asian Table Tennis Championships,
according to olympics.com.
Meena Parande and Yatin Vyas - silver winners from the 1954 edition - were the last Indian table tennis players to win a medal in mixed doubles at the continental championships.
Harmeet and Yashaswini opened their mixed doubles campaign with a bye in the opening round before defeating Indonesia’s Muhammad Negara and Citra Rasmi 3-0 (14-12, 12-10, 11-7) to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.

The Indian duo then overcame Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Hsien-chia and Wu Ying Syuan 3-1 (11-6, 12-10, 11-13, 11-7) before staging a comeback to beat the Republic of Korea’s Park Gang-hyeon
and Lee Daeun 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9) in the quarter-finals.

The victory secured their place in the semi-finals and assured the medal.
Meanwhile, the other Indian mixed doubles pair of Payas Jain and Youth Olympics-bound Syndrela Das crashed out in the quarter-finals.
Payas-Syndrela received a bye in the opening round before registering back-to-back 3-0 wins over Uzbekistan’s Shokhrukh Iskandarov and Arujan Kamalova and Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Guan-Hong and Yeh Yi-tian.
However, their campaign ended in the next round, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to the People’s Republic of China’s Huang Youzheng and Chen Yi.
