ASME meet calls for people-centric innovation to drive engineering growth

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 25 (UNI) Engineering innovations should focus on improving people's lives and contributing to social welfare and national development, Kerala Minister for Health and Devaswom K. Muraleedharan said at the annual meet of the Keralam Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) India here.
The minister, who attended the meet as chief guest, said young engineers and students should assess technology not merely in terms of its capabilities but also by the positive changes it could bring to society.
Bringing engineering, technology and innovation together towards common goals could significantly contribute to Kerala's development, particularly in healthcare and welfare, while supporting the country's overall progress, he said.
The annual meet brought together engineers, academicians, students and industry representatives to exchange technical knowledge, strengthen professional skills and promote collaboration across Kerala's engineering sector.
Dr Ciza Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology, who attended as guest of honour, said while a university degree opened up opportunities for young engineers, professional organisations helped them utilise those opportunities and progress in their careers.
Avni Malhotra, Director of ASME Foundation India, stressed the need for continuous learning, noting that technical expertise alone was not enough to meet the changing requirements of the engineering profession.
Deputy Director Hari Balachandran, Kerala Section Vice-Chairperson Dr Lijo Paul, Secretary Dr Jose Mathew, Member-at-Large Christopher Raju and engineer K. Rajasekharan led various sessions.
The programme featured technical discussions, skill-development sessions and student felicitation. It also aimed to strengthen cooperation among educational institutions, industry experts and practising engineers, while creating opportunities for students and young professionals to expand their knowledge and enhance their skills.
