Assam: 12 districts affected by floods, eight dead

Guwahati, May 31 (UNI) At least 12 districts of Assam were affected by floods on Saturday, affecting 60,000 people, even as eight people have died in floods and landslides across the state.
While three people died due to floods in the past 24 hours, five others have died due to a landslide in Assam's capital town Guwahati in the last 24 hours.
A flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday evening said that 175 villages under 20 revenue circles have been affected by floods in 12 districts.
The bulletin said that close to 60,000 people have been affected by floods in the affected areas.
As flood water has inundated people's houses, some of them have also taken shelter in higher places.
ASDMA officials said that a total of 1,224 people, including over 200 children, have also taken shelter in relief camps opened by the state government in different flood hit areas.
It may be mentioned here that although the rain has subsided, the flood situation is yet to improve in Guwahati where most of the areas are witnessing waterlogging since the last 48 hours. The continuous rainfall has also forced the government to declare special leave to the state government employees in Kamrup and Kamrup Metro districts and closed all schools and colleges on Saturday.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who reviewed the preparedness last evening ensured that adequate teams of NDRF, SDRF and DDRF have been stationed across Assam to tackle the rainfall and flood scenario.
"We have been reviewing the impending situation for the last 3 days and over 14,000MT of rice has also been dispatched to provide relief in affected areas," Sarma said on his X handle.
