Gopalpur Industrial Park emerging as a hub for green hydrogen

Bhubaneswar, June 2 (UNI) Tata Steel Special Economic Zone’s Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP) is rapidly emerging as a hub for green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green energy equipment manufacturing.
Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, GIP is expected to contribute around 10 percent of India’s green hydrogen and ammonia production target by 2030.
Manikanta Naik, Managing Director of Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited, said GIP has already signed land leasing and blocking agreements with multiple green hydrogen players. These agreements will facilitate a total production capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum of green ammonia, with an estimated multi-phased investment of over Rs 27,000 crore.
“We expect a few more projects of similar nature to come up in GIP shortly,” he added.
Around 25 percent of GIP’s available land has been earmarked for green hydrogen/ammonia and renewable energy sectors, aligning with national sustainability goals.
Naik further explained that GIP’s infrastructure master plan includes a 2.5 km long, 60 m wide exclusive utility corridor that will connect the industrial park to Gopalpur Port. This corridor will ensure secure and efficient transportation of green ammonia for global exports. GIP has already collaborated with Gopalpur Port to facilitate the seamless shipment of green ammonia to international markets, supporting India’s export ambitions.
To ensure sustainable, round-the-clock water availability, GIP has provisions for setting up a desalination plant. This will address critical industrial water needs while safeguarding local resources.
Naik said GIP is also working to facilitate reliable green power transmission from western regions of India, reinforcing its commitment to providing clean energy solutions. In addition, it is working towards establishing a Common Effluent Treatment Plant to safely dispose of industrial wastewater.
He also mentioned that GIP has joined the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Transitioning Industrial Clusters Initiative, which brings together public and private sector stakeholders from industrial clusters to reduce CO2 emissions. This global initiative, implemented in collaboration with Accenture and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), aims to accelerate large-scale decarbonisation by fostering industrial ecosystems that promote sustainability, energy efficiency, and green innovation.
“With a clear focus on sustainability, GIP is aligning its development goals with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global leader in the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives,” Naik said.
He concluded by noting that the ongoing rapid industrialisation of Odisha, which includes large clusters like GIP, is creating new opportunities to dedicate infrastructure and expertise to build a decarbonised future. “GIP’s focus on green hydrogen and renewable energy clusters reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainable industrial development,” he said.
