ATS arrests suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed operative in Mumbai

Mumbai, Oct 24 (UNI) The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 33-year-old man from Mahim in central Mumbai for his alleged links with the banned terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), officials said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar, was arrested by the ATS's Kalachowki unit following a tip-off about his suspected activities, officials said.
According to the ATS, the accused worked as a Rapido rider and sold perfumes. He allegedly used social media to spread radical views, promote communal hatred and circulate messages against the country.
During the investigation, officials reportedly found messages supporting jihad and other objectionable material on his mobile phone and social media accounts. The material allegedly included audio clips of speeches by JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar.
Investigators also suspect that Akhtar used a Telegram group to share inflammatory audio speeches by Azhar on issues including the Babri Masjid. Such content was allegedly uploaded on June 1. He was also reportedly active in a Telegram channel named 'IBN-e-Qasim', which the ATS suspects is linked to extremist activities backed by Pakistan.
The ATS is investigating his online activities and contacts to determine whether he was part of a wider network. Officials are also examining whether he had links with Pakistani Intelligence Operators (PIOs).
Investigators are further checking a comment allegedly posted by the accused about the Prime Minister's visit to Mumbai, along with other social media posts.
The accused has been taken into custody for questioning.
His mobile phone and other electronic devices have been seized and sent for forensic examination.
Further investigation is going on.
