Shimla, June 13 (UNI) A 19-year-old girl staying at Balika Ashram in Mashobra was found hanging near the staircase of the premises on Thursday, in what is being treated as a case of suicide.
The deceased, originally from the Chamba district, was discovered by fellow inmates, following which the local police and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were informed. The preliminary investigation suggests that the girl died by suicide.
Superintendent of Police (additional charge) Shimla, Gaurav Singh, confirmed the incident and stated that early findings point towards suicide, though the exact circumstances are still under investigation.
The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. Statements of staff members and other residents of the Ashram are being recorded. The body has been sent for post-mortem at IGMC Shimla.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the Ashram, which houses young girls from vulnerable backgrounds. Authorities have assured that the matter is being handled with utmost sensitivity, considering the victim’s background and the institution's nature.
Balika Ashram, operated under the Department of Women and Child Development, Himachal Pradesh, is meant to provide care and protection to girls in need. Officials from the department are also expected to visit the Ashram to review the circumstances and provide counseling support to other inmates.
