Bangladesh Parliament Speaker says former PM Sheikh Hasina unlikely to return even by next decade

Dhaka, Oct 22 (UNI) Bangladesh’s Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram has said former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is unlikely to return to the country within the next decade, citing his political experience.
“My political experience says there is no possibility of Sheikh Hasina returning even in the next 10 years,” he told journalists at the district circuit house in Bhola on Thursday.
The Speaker accused the Awami League, which governed Bangladesh under Hasina, of creating conditions that prevented honest, capable and politically neutral people from contesting elections. He called for sweeping reforms to the electoral system to give ordinary citizens a fair opportunity to stand for office.
A candidate’s wealth should not determine their eligibility to contest elections, he said, urging the Election Commission to establish a system that allows people with public support and acceptance to participate.
Hafiz also stressed that the upcoming local government elections must be free, fair and impartial, saying elections had not been conducted fairly over the past 17 years.
“Elections were not held fairly over the last 17 years. So the upcoming local government elections will be held freely, fairly and impartially,” he said.
Turning to Bhola’s natural gas potential, the Speaker said the district had substantial reserves that could be comparable to Bangladesh’s existing national reserves, with the possibility of further deposits.
“The people of Bhola have been suffering for a long time. Gas is the rightful right of the people of Bhola,” he said.
Hafiz left Bhola for Dhaka after completing a three-day visit to his constituency of Lalmohan-Tazumuddin.
