Bangladesh student leader Hasnat Abdullah attacked by bike-borne assailants

Dhaka, May 5 (UNI) Hasnat Abdullah, leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party – the official political unit of the Students Against Discrimination Movement, which lead to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government last August, was attacked in the city of Gazipur in Dhaka while travelling in a vehicle.
Assailants on motorbikes attacked the car of Hasnat Abdullah while he was travelling in it, injuring him in the process.
The incident occurred near the Chandna Intersection on Sunday evening, said Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Hasan.
“He was returning to Dhaka after attending a function in the vicinity of Gazipur Agricultural University. While his convoy was stuck in a traffic jam in the Chandana intersection area, four-five motorcycles drove in and attacked his car,” he said.
“He was injured in the attack and the car's windows and windshield were shattered as well. Later, Hasnat was safely brought to Dhaka."
In response to the attack, Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Advisor has said that no concession will be granted to the attackers, condemning the incident.
“A group of people from behind attacked my car around 7:00 pm in the Chandna intersection area on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. I was hit by broken glass of the car in my left hand,” Hasnat Abdullah told BSS over telephone.
The incident was disclosed in the evening through a Facebook post from Sarjis Alam, NCP Chief Coordinator (Northern Region).
“After the incident, Hasnat Abdullah's vehicle headed towards Dhaka. As it reached the Board Bazar area near the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), students from the university came forward to ensure his safety,” NCP Chief Organizer (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam told BSS.
Confirming the attack, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Taherul Haque Chauhan told The Business Standard BD that Hasnat Abdullah’s car was attacked while he was enroute to Dhaka after attending an event in Tangail.
His car slowed down in Gazipur metropolitan intersection due to traffic, where “some individuals came on a motorcycle, attacked his car, and left.”
Chauhan added that several teams of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police are working to arrest the attackers.
"We are investigating whether there were any CCTV cameras in the area and are collecting other intelligence information. It is hoped that the perpetrators will be brought to justice swiftly.”
The attack on the NCP leader led to massive protests in various areas of the city, with demonstrators demanding justice for the attack, which includes SAD members, NCP officials, and Bangladesh Jamaat - e- Islami's student wing. So far, 54 individuals have been detained over the attack.
Bangladesh interim government’s Home Affairs Advisor, Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Choudhary, condemning the attack said that no concession will be granted to the attackers, who will be brought to justice.
