US President Donald Trump says he is reopening San Francisco’s notorious Alcatraz Prison

Washington, May 5 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has said he is ordering the reopening and expansion of the notorious Alcatraz prison in San Francisco to house "the most ruthless and violent offenders".
In a post on Truth Social, the POTUS wrote: "For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering.
“When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That's the way it's supposed to be, “reported CBS News.
The infamous maximum-security prison, known colloquially as The Rock, is noted for its history of housing its most nefarious and most wanted prisoners, untold police brutality, horrible prison conditions, and its reported count of zero-escapes.
The federal prison was closed in 1963, and turned into a public museum. Since then, it has become a popular tourist attraction.
Trump said he is directing the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security to "reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America's most ruthless and violent Offenders."
"The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order and JUSTICE," he added.
According to BBC, President Trump has been clashing with the courts over his policy of sending alleged gang members to a prison in El Salvador. In March, he sent a group of more than 200 alleged Venezuelan gang members there. He has also talked about sending "homegrown criminals" to foreign prisons.
As per CBS News, Trump told reporters that he came up with the idea because of his frustration with "radicalised judges" who have insisted those being deported receive due process.
"It's an idea I had I guess because the judges, so many of these radicalised judges, want to have trials for every single person. Think of it. Every single person that is in our country illegally," he said. He called Alcatraz "a bad symbol, but it's a symbol of law and order."
The prison is known for housing notorious gangsters such as Al Capone, George "Machine-Gun" Kelly, Alvin Karpis (the first "Public Enemy No. 1") and Arthur "Doc" Barker. However, it was not used only for housing gangsters, but rather inmates who did not comply with orders of other federal prisons. As such, Alcatraz was seen as the ‘last resort’ prison.
Alcatraz, since its closure has become a very popular symbol in the US, and has since then been depicted frequently in entertainment, such as in director Michael Bay’s 1996 film ‘The Rock’, starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, and various ‘Call Of Duty’ games.
