Bangladeshi Hindus lodged in Raiganj, other correctional homes to be released soon: Bengal CM

Siliguri, Oct 29 (UNI) Bangladeshi Hindus who fled their homes and crossed into India to escape alleged attacks and persecution by Jamaat members will be released from correctional homes as soon as possible, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said at a public rally in Raiganj on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Adhikari said the Hindus had sought refuge in India to protect their lives and dharma. He said they should not remain behind bars and called for steps to secure their release from correctional homes in Uttar Dinajpur district.
He assigned West Bengal Law Minister Biraj Biswas, who was present at the meeting, the responsibility of initiating the necessary legal procedures and urged the administration to examine the matter without delay.
Adhikari said the Chief Minister had indicated that Biswas would take the necessary legal steps to facilitate the release of the Bangladeshi Hindus lodged in correctional homes. He described them as people who had come to India seeking refuge to protect their lives and religion.
Turning to the issue of citizenship, Adhikari said eligible refugees would be granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). He said around 9,000 applications had been submitted and expressed hope that the process would be completed by November 30.
Quoting union Home Minister Amit Shah, Adhikari said, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assigned me the responsibility of issuing citizenship certificates to them.”
He added that applicants belonging to Scheduled Castes would receive caste certificates and that all eligible applicants would be enrolled in the electoral rolls in January 2027.
Adhikari also appealed to people who had fled Bangladesh and crossed into India, particularly those living in the district, to apply for citizenship under the CAA, provided they met the eligibility criteria. He said Biswas had been entrusted with examining the matter seriously.
Given Uttar Dinajpur's proximity to the India-Bangladesh border, Adhikari said the Border Security Force (BSF) and the police would work together and urged residents to cooperate with the security agencies.
He asserted that no illegal madrasa would be allowed to come up along the international border and that anti-national activities would not be tolerated.
Referring to what he described as “cockroach” and “bedbug” gangs, Adhikari said such groups would not be allowed to regroup, expand their networks or extend their activities to other areas amid developments in Bangladesh.
Referring to the activities of Jamaat in Bangladesh, he warned that attacks during religious festivals would not be tolerated and that the authorities would deal with such incidents firmly. He appealed to people to remain united.
Adhikari also said that the state was being run in accordance with the philosophy of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.
He urged people to keep a watch on madrasas and ascertain whether students were singing the full version of Vande Mataram during prayers. He called for vigilance on the issue.
Drawing a distinction between refugees and infiltrators, Adhikari said those eligible for Indian citizenship would be treated in accordance with the applicable legal provisions, while infiltrators would be lodged in holding centres. He said public money would not be spent on providing food for the latter and asserted that they would have to return to Bangladesh.
“We will drive them out of this country. We will send them back to the pavilion—that is, Bangladesh,” he said. UNI MBN NST CDS
