Bengal: Fresh low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal likely to bring further weather alerts to region

Kolkata, Oct 29 (UNI) A fresh weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger further weather warnings in the coming days, even as the remnants of Cyclone Arnab continue to influence weather conditions in West Bengal.
According to weather scientists, a low-pressure area has formed over the south Andaman Sea and is expected to move west-northwestwards. It is likely to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands by Thursday, before developing into a depression by Saturday.
Weather officials said the system was expected to intensify into a depression, but it was too early to determine whether it would subsequently develop into a cyclone. The Regional Meteorological Centre is monitoring its movement. Current observations suggest that the system could move towards Andhra Pradesh at a later stage.
Meanwhile, the remnants of the very severe cyclonic storm Arnab, which weakened into a depression over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south Odisha, brought morning rainfall to Kolkata, Howrah and other adjoining districts of south Bengal today.
A weather official explained that clouds become less organised and disperse after a cyclone makes landfall and weakens. The scattered clouds along the storm’s outer bands contributed to the rainfall and overcast conditions across the region.
The official also pointed to the system’s changing trajectory as another factor. While Arnab had moved in a relatively straight path over the Bay of Bengal, it turned after landfall and travelled towards Chhattisgarh, bringing it closer to Gangetic West Bengal. The distance between the system and the region consequently decreased from more than 700 km to around 500 km, bringing south Bengal within its outer periphery.
The region is therefore experiencing the effects of two weather systems — the remnants of Cyclone Arnab and the developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. UNI NN NST
