Banks to remain open on Sunday ahead of 3-day nationwide strike

New Delhi, Sep 23 (UNI) All Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will remain open and operate as usual on Sunday, September 27, 2026, as the government seeks to limit disruption to banking services ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide strike.
The decision has been taken in view of the proposed strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), scheduled from September 28 to September 30. With September 26 and 27 falling on the weekend, the strike could otherwise have led to an extended interruption in banking services.
The Ministry of Finance, in a statement issued on September 23, said public sector banks and regional rural banks would function normally on September 27 to ensure that customers can access essential banking services before the strike begins.
The ministry said the arrangement has been made to prevent the combination of weekend holidays and the proposed strike from causing prolonged inconvenience to the public.
The additional working day will cover the wider banking network, including regular branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests. This is intended to keep essential banking operations available ahead of the strike period.
The government and bank managements have also appealed to the unions to reconsider and defer the proposed strike. However, the three-day industrial action is currently scheduled to begin on Monday, September 28, and continue through Wednesday, September 30.
The decision to keep PSBs and RRBs operational on Sunday will give customers an additional opportunity to complete branch-based transactions before the strike. Customers who require services that may not be immediately accessible during the strike period can use the additional working day to plan their banking requirements.
The government said the move was part of measures being taken to ensure that essential banking services remain uninterrupted despite the proposed industrial action.
The Ministry of Finance reiterated that the welfare and convenience of bank customers remain a key priority and said steps were being taken to minimise the impact of the proposed strike on the public.
With Sunday, September 27, designated as a normal working day for PSBs and RRBs, customers will have an additional window to carry out banking transactions before the proposed three-day nationwide strike.
