Barot campsite fire: Property worth ₹38.93 lakh reduced to ashes

Barot/Tikkan, June 9 (UNI) A devastating fire gutted a private riverside campsite at Dharangan village under Sub-Tehsil Tikkan in Chhota Bhangal in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh today, destroying property worth over Rs 38.93 lakh.
The blaze, which began around 9:24 pm yesterday, reduced the entire facility—including a restaurant, kitchen, and stored essentials—to ashes within minutes.
The fire originated due to a suspected gas cylinder leakage in the kitchen area, said Chaman Lal, the camp owner and son of Mati Ram.
Despite his attempts to control the flames and the villagers’ swift response, the fire had already consumed the structure and all its contents—ranging from crockery and bedding to solar geysers, speakers, and wooden fittings.
Patwari Rohit Thakur confirmed the scale of the damage, and Panchayat Pradhan Dr. Ramesh Thakur has urged the administration to provide immediate relief, and demanded that a fire station be set up in Barot or Multhan.
He expressed deep concern over the lack of fire services in remote regions like Chauhar and Bada Bhangal, where such incidents are frequent but compensation remains negligible.
This is the third major fire in the Barot region this year.
On February 16, five shops were destroyed in Lambadag market, and on March 23, two kiosks caught fire in Lakda Bazar, Barot.
While fire incidents have surged in parts of the state due to heatwaves and sizzling temperatures, recent rainfall brought a temporary relief in hill regions. However, this tragedy underscores the pressing need for fire safety infrastructure in remote valleys where cultural heritage, woodwork, and traditional hill architecture are at constant risk.
The administration conducted a preliminary assessment and revisited the site in the morning to complete damage verification.
