Bee corridors, medicinal groves to enrich Odisha’s highway landscape

Bhubaneswar, Oct 12 (UNI) The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Regional Office Odisha, is integrating biodiversity conservation with highway development through bee corridors, medicinal groves and roadside plantations, having planted 5.20 lakh saplings across the State in just four months.
The plantation drive aims to expand green cover, support pollinators and conserve indigenous plant species through initiatives such as the Arogya Van programme, highway median greening, bamboo plantations and community-based greening.
Under the Arogya Van programme, 2,500 medicinal plants, including Bahada, Neem, Harida and Amla, have been planted at Kunduli in Koraput district along the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130CD). The initiative seeks to conserve traditional medicinal flora and raise awareness of its ecological and cultural significance.
NHAI has planted 39,337 saplings under the Bee Corridor initiative to support pollinators and strengthen roadside biodiversity. The plantations include Neem, Spathodea, Arjun, Patoli, Kadamba, Tabebuia rosea and Radhachuda.
Another 87,338 plants, including Bougainvillea, Tecoma, Calliandra and Caesalpinia, have been planted along highway medians to enhance green cover and improve roadside landscapes. The drive also includes 6,000 bamboo plants and 7,097 saplings under the Community Plantation initiative.
NHAI has extended plantation activities to schools, colleges and other community locations to encourage public participation in environmental conservation.
Through medicinal groves, pollinator-friendly corridors and community plantations, NHAI aims to promote biodiversity and make Odisha’s highway network more ecologically sustainable.UNI MK AAB
