Bengal anti-corruption commission probes tender irregularities against former minister Indranil Sen

Kolkata, Oct 2 (UNI) After the Enforcement Directorate, the West Bengal Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an investigation into allegations of large-scale tender irregularities involving former Trinamool Congress minister Indranil Sen, his family members and close associates in connection with the state government's ‘Bangla Moder Garbo’ project.
K. Jayaraman, Additional Director General of Police of the Anti-Corruption Commission, confirmed that an investigation had been initiated based on the allegations.
“An investigation has been launched based on the allegations,” Jayaraman said.
The probe relates to the ‘Bangla Moder Garbo’ initiative launched by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department during Sen's tenure as the minister in charge of the department.
The project was aimed at showcasing Bengal's folk culture, handicrafts and history across the state's districts while providing opportunities to local artists.
As part of the initiative, fairs and exhibitions were organised across the districts, featuring stalls for local handicrafts and cultural programmes involving folk artists, including Baul, Bhatiyali and tribal dance performers.
According to complaints received by the Commission, tenders issued for organising these fairs and exhibitions in 2022 and 2023 were allegedly awarded repeatedly to a select group of companies.
The tenders were issued by officials of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department at the time.
The complaints allege that Sen used his influence to ensure that contracts worth crores of rupees were awarded to companies allegedly owned or controlled by his relatives and close associates.
The contracts covered setting up stalls, organising cultural programmes and engaging artists for various performances.
They have claimed that tenders worth hundreds of crores of rupees were issued for fairs and events held across 23 districts over two consecutive years.
Sources in the Commission said a preliminary inquiry was initiated after the complaints were received.
Investigators are examining the alleged relationship between Sen and the owners of the companies that secured the contracts.
The Commission is also assessing the value of individual tenders, the expenditure incurred by the companies and the profits allegedly generated from the contracts.
Investigators are additionally examining allegations that the companies collected commissions from local artisans on products sold through stalls at the fairs.
As part of the investigation, the Commission may question Sen, his family members and close associates.
After examining tender documents, financial records and other evidence, the Commission is expected to prepare a report and submit its findings to the state government. UNI BGA/SAG NST CDS
