Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari asks Nandigram voters to wipe out Trinamool in bypoll

Nandigram, Oct 2 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari turned the Nandigram Assembly by-election into a personal high stakes political contest, launching a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress and urging voters to ensure that none of its candidates could retain their deposits.
Addressing a BJP rally at Birulia in support of party nominee Hasirani Rath on Friday, Adhikari sought to reassure voters that his decision to vacate the Nandigram seat after winning both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 Assembly elections would not mark the end of his political engagement with the constituency.
"My relationship in Nandigram is for 24 years. It will not end. You will have me for the next 55 months," Adhikari said, promising to continue working for Nandigram and asserting that his offices would remain functional and the services he had provided would continue.
He said Rath, the mother of slain BJP worker and his former aide Chandranath Rath, would be a "qualified MLA", pointing out that she had experience in the panchayat system and would remain accessible to voters.
"Vote in such a way that every Trinamool candidate loses their deposit. Not a single deposit should remain," he said, alleging that the party had committed "so much sin and oppression".
Recalling his earlier electoral battle with former chief minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, Adhikari claimed that the Trinamool Congress had lost its political presence in the constituency following the withdrawal of its candidate from the by-election.
He also alleged that attempts had been made to manipulate the EVMs during the previous election.
Adhikari said he had been compelled to vacate Nandigram after retaining Bhabanipur in accordance with constitutional provisions.
He sought to portray Rath's candidature as a continuation of his political presence in the constituency rather than a break from it.
"She is not only the mother of Chandranath. She has experience in the panchayat system and will remain accessible to you," he said.
The Chief Minister also referred to arrests in corruption cases, claiming that several accused persons were already in jail and suggesting that a prominent accused would eventually face the same fate.
Later, referring to Chandranath Rath's death, Adhikari alleged that his former aide had paid with his life for working with him.
"They brought sharp shooters from Uttar Pradesh and the Bhaipo gang gave two crore rupees. CBI is investigating. No one will be spared. Some have gone to jail and others will soon go," he added.
He appealed to voters to treat the October 6 election as a democratic response to the killing.
The Nandigram Assembly constituency will vote on October 6, with the BJP seeking to retain the seat after Adhikari resigned from it. UNI BGA/SAG NST CDS
