Bengal: Blood donors’ body seeks probe into alleged disruption of Ballygunge camp

Kolkata, Oct 23 (UNI) The West Bengal Voluntary Blood Donors’ Society has written to the Joint Director (Blood Safety) of the state Health and Family Welfare Department, seeking an inquiry into alleged administrative obstruction at a blood donation camp in Ballygunge on October 20.
In a letter, the society’s general secretary, Kabi Ghosh, said a camp organised by the CPI(M)’s Ballygunge-1 Area Committee to address a blood shortage and support victims of the Chorbagan stampede was disrupted following the intervention of Beniapukur police station.
The society claimed that a blood collection bus had arrived at the venue and 50 to 60 donors were waiting to donate blood. However, after the bus was sent back, only two people could donate, it alleged.
Describing blood donation as a humanitarian commitment that transcends political affiliations, the society termed the incident disappointing amid a blood shortage in the state.
Ghosh cited two Calcutta High Court orders — West Bengal Police Drivers’ Welfare Society versus the Bengal government, dated February 4, 2011, and Ankit Deb versus the Bengal government, dated June 22, 2023. He said the court orders held that recognition by the police directorate was not mandatory for organising blood donation camps and that the police should cooperate in facilitating them.
The society has demanded an impartial, high-level inquiry into the Ballygunge incident and administrative action against those responsible. It has also sought the immediate introduction of a uniform state-wide protocol clarifying administrative permission requirements, the role of the police and the responsibilities of blood centres in organising donation camps, in line with the High Court directives.
Meanwhile, the East Burdwan police organised a voluntary blood donation camp at Galsi police station on Friday, where more than 50 people volunteered to donate blood, police said. UNI KS NST
