Bengal: Two Maoist leaders surrender at Lalbazar, Rs 7 lakh bounty on them

Kolkata, Oct 23 (UNI) Two senior Maoist leaders, identified as Mangal and Malati, surrendered before the Kolkata Police at Lalbazar on Friday, marking a significant development in efforts to curb Maoist activities and bring armed cadres back into the mainstream.
The two arrived at the Kolkata Police headquarters and surrendered in the presence of senior officers, police sources said.
According to sources at Lalbazar, a reward of Rs 5 lakh had been announced for Mangal, while the Jharkhand Police had placed a bounty of Rs 2 lakh on Malati. The combined reward for the two was Rs 7 lakh.
Speaking to the media after the surrender, Mangal said armed struggle could bring no benefit to society and would only lead to destruction and bloodshed. He said the two had decided to abandon violence and return to mainstream life.
Police sources said both face several criminal cases registered in West Bengal and other states. Mangal, in particular, faces multiple cases at Salboni police station in West Midnapore district and is suspected of involvement in Maoist attacks in the Jangalmahal region.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand confirmed that a combined bounty of Rs 7 lakh had been announced for the two leaders, with Rs 5 lakh on Mangal and Rs 2 lakh on Malati, according to the Jharkhand Police.
Nand said further action would be taken in accordance with legal procedures, given the cases registered against them in different police stations. A team from the Jharkhand Police may visit Lalbazar to question the two, he added.
The Kolkata Police is also considering measures to help them reintegrate into society in accordance with the state government's rehabilitation policies and packages.
Sources at Lalbazar said a large quantity of firearms and ammunition had been recovered from the two Maoists.
The surrender is being viewed as a setback for Maoist activities and a possible signal to other armed cadres, particularly those in the Jangalmahal region, that they can abandon violence and return to civilian life. UNI BGA NST CDS
