Bengal: Burdwan mother faces AI-generated image threat after filing case against fake doctor

Burdwan, Sep 27 (UNI) In a shocking twist to the post-surgery death of a four-year-old boy earlier this month, the child's mother was allegedly threatened with the mass circulation of AI-generated obscene images of her in an attempt to force her to withdraw her complaint of medical negligence against a 'fake' physician and the concerned nursing home.
On September 2, four-year-old Aranya Roy from Ramjibonpur in West Midnapore was admitted to a nursing home in Nababhat here for phimosis surgery. Within hours of the surgery, he reportedly turned blue due to the impact of anaesthesia and died.
Jayanta Roy, the deceased's father, alleged, "We didn't get a bare minimum support, neither from the nursing home, nor from that physician. They declined to meet us and threatened us to vacate at once."
The grieving family lodged complaints with the East Burdwan police and the State Health Department. The subsequent investigation reportedly revealed that the nursing home's operating practitioner, Sheikh Saidul Haque, had no valid medical qualifications and had allegedly been practising there illegally for years, besides teaching as a faculty member at a private medical college in Burdwan town.
The Indian Medical Association subsequently suspended his membership after the allegations came to light. Police said Haque was still at large.
Following public protests and the filing of the complaint, Aranya's 22-year-old mother allegedly began receiving anonymous calls threatening to superimpose her face on explicit images and circulate them on social media if she did not withdraw the case immediately.
She lodged a fresh complaint at Manteswar police station in East Burdwan last week. Cybercrime officials subsequently arrested Asadul Mallick from Haripal in Hooghly last night, though he denied the allegations.
Meanwhile, East Burdwan Chief Medical Officer Dr Joyram Hembram ordered the closure of the nursing home. The Health Department has also launched a wider crackdown on illegal clinics in the region, with several other practitioners allegedly found to be operating without valid qualifications.
Health Minister Dr Shardwat Mukherjee said, "Five such fake doctors have already been booked from across the state, but the figure of such miscreants is much more, which we are handling cautiously, as many have already absconded."
