Bengal CM Adhikari attacks Mamata Banerjee over 2021 injury claim on eve of Nandigram bypoll

Nandigram, Oct 4 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched a fresh attack on former chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday over her 2021 claim that she had fractured her leg during campaigning in Nandigram, as the BJP stepped up its final campaign for the October 6 bypoll.
Addressing supporters during a nearly three-kilometre roadshow from Tengua More to Nandigram Hospital, Adhikari asked whether March 10 should be observed as “West Bengal Falsehood Day”, referring to the day in 2021 when Banerjee was injured during her campaign in the constituency.

“Would it be appropriate to observe March 10 as West Bengal Falsehood Day?” Adhikari asked, repeating his allegation that Banerjee had made a false claim about suffering a fracture during the 2021 election campaign.
Adhikari was accompanied by his brother Dibyendu Adhikari, minister Arup Kumar Das and BJP candidate Hasirani Rath during the roadshow.
The chief minister had on Saturday alleged that Banerjee’s claim of a leg fracture in 2021 was false and announced that the state government would initiate an inquiry into the matter after the bypolls.
He had displayed medical documents at Nabanna and claimed that a radiodiagnosis report from the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences dated March 11, 2021, stated that there was no evidence of a fracture.
“During the 2021 election, the entire Nandigram was insulted by the claim that the then chief minister’s leg had been broken,” Adhikari said, holding up the document.
Adhikari had defeated Banerjee in Nandigram in the 2021 Assembly election.
In the 2026 Assembly polls, he contested from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram and won both seats.
He subsequently retained Bhabanipur and vacated Nandigram, necessitating the October 6 bypoll.
Seeking votes for Rath, Adhikari said the BJP candidate’s victory would depend on the turnout.
“The higher the polling, the bigger the margin of victory will be,” he said.
He also claimed that over 1,000 members of the minority community had joined Sunday’s procession in Nandigram, which has around 72,000 minority voters, and expressed confidence that a section of them would vote for the BJP.
Meanwhile, campaigning also intensified in Rejinagar, where the bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of former MLA Humayun Kabir.
More than 65 per cent of Rejinagar’s electorate comprises minority voters.
Kabir had won the seat in the last Assembly election on an Am Janata Unnayan Party ticket by securing a major share of the minority vote.
He has now fielded his son Golam Nabi Azad (Robin) as the party candidate, but the contest is widely seen as a test of Kabir’s own political standing.
Congress candidate Abdullahil Kafi, Trinamool candidate Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, Ganatantrik Trinamool candidate Safiuzzaman Sheikh and CPM candidate Mohammad Said are also campaigning aggressively.
The BJP believes that a division of anti-BJP votes among the opposition candidates could improve its prospects in the constituency.
