Bhandari’s vision, service left an enduring imprint on Sikkim: CM Tamang

Siliguri, Oct 5 (UNI) Paying tribute to former Sikkim Chief Minister Late Nar Bahadur Bhandari on his 86th birth anniversary, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Monday said that his “vision, dedication and service left an enduring imprint on the history and progress” of the state.
Tamang was speaking at a commemorative programme held at Samman Bhawan in Gangtok to mark the birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister, who served Sikkim from 1979 to 1994.
The programme was attended by the Deputy Speaker, Cabinet Ministers, MPs, MLAs, Chief Secretary, elected representatives, former legislators, political functionaries, senior government officials and other dignitaries.
The programme began with Tamang and other dignitaries lighting the ceremonial lamp in memory of the late leader. OSD, Culture Department, Neelam Neopaney, delivered a special address on Bhandari’s life, political journey and contributions to Sikkim’s development. A documentary produced by the Information and Public Relations Department on his life and legacy was also screened.
Born on October 5, 1940, Bhandari played a significant role in securing the inclusion of the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
Tamang described the achievement as a landmark contribution that safeguarded the linguistic rights and cultural identity of the Nepali-speaking community.
He said the observance of Shri Bhandari Jayanti as a gazetted holiday and the Nar Bahadur Bhandari Fellowship Scheme were expressions of respect for his contribution and commitment to education.
Tamang said Bhandari’s ideals of service, justice, equality and dedication to the people would continue to guide Sikkim in building a stronger and harmonious state.
