Bengal CM asks police to reopen cases against Chopra MLA, warns of jail

Siliguri, Oct 29 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday asked senior police officials to reopen cases registered against Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahman, warning that those allegedly involved in land grabbing in North Dinajpur would face legal action and that the MLA would eventually be sent to jail.
Addressing a public rally in Raiganj, the Chief Minister, without naming Rahman directly, referred to singer-cum-politician and former minister Indranil Sen as an example while warning that the government would not hesitate to act against influential people accused of illegal land acquisition.
Drawing a parallel with Sen, whom he said had recently gone to jail, Adhikari warned that the same fate could await the Chopra MLA. He called upon the police to reopen the cases registered against him and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The Chief Minister's remarks came amid his concerns over what he described as a disturbing trend of land grabbing in North Dinajpur, particularly the alleged grabbing of land belonging to poor Hindu families and members of the Adivasi community.
He said his government would not tolerate the alleged dispossession of vulnerable families and made it clear that recovering land taken over illegally would be among the administration's priorities.
Adhikari specifically directed the Additional District Magistrate (Land and Land Reforms) to look into complaints relating to land belonging to Adivasi and Sanatani families that had allegedly been grabbed over the past few years during the tenure of the previous government in the district.
He asked the official to initiate the necessary process to identify such land and take steps for its recovery, stressing that the interests of the affected families had to be protected.
The Chief Minister also drew attention to alleged land-grabbing activities in the tea-growing areas under the Islampur subdivision. Referring to the alleged involvement of influential persons, he questioned how certain individuals had acquired the power to take over land belonging to tea garden areas and Adivasi and Sanatani families.
Although he did not name Rahman during his remarks on the issue, the Chief Minister subsequently directed the police to reopen cases registered against the Chopra MLA. His warning signalled that the state government intended to pursue the allegations through the police and the land and land reforms administration.
Senior police officials, including the Inspector General of Police, North Bengal, and the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Malda Range, were present at the meeting when Adhikari issued the direction.
The Chief Minister said his government would not allow alleged land grabbers to operate with impunity, irrespective of their political influence. He reiterated his warning by citing Sen's case and said those found responsible would face the consequences of their actions.
