Bengal: Cobra enters classroom during school hours in Dhupguri

Siliguri, Oct 1 (UNI) Panic gripped a primary school in Dhupguri on Thursday after a venomous cobra entered a classroom while classes were in progress.
The incident occurred at Boragari-1 BFP Primary School in Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri district, where students fled the classroom after spotting the snake.
Teachers immediately moved the students to an adjoining classroom and locked the affected room, where the snake remained curled up in a corner. Members of the Dooars Nature and Snake Lovers Organisation were informed about the incident.
Environmental activist Bhajan Saha reached the school along with other members of the organisation. According to Roni Chowdhury, a member of the organisation, the snake moved between the third and fourth classrooms for more than two hours, disrupting normal classes.
The incident also highlighted the frequent encounters between people and snakes in the Dooars and adjoining Terai areas of North Bengal. Dhupguri, an important agricultural belt known for potato cultivation, lies close to forested areas of the Dooars, where encounters with snakes are not uncommon.
Snake rescuers and environmental groups in the region are frequently called upon to rescue venomous snakes, including king cobras, from residential areas, schools and other human settlements. Such rescue operations have become a regular feature in several parts of the Dooars and adjoining areas.
The cobra rescued from the Dhupguri school was around four and a half feet long. It was subsequently taken to a safe location and released into the forest.
No student or teacher was injured in the incident. However, the presence of a venomous snake inside a classroom has raised concerns among students, teachers and parents over safety in schools located close to forested areas.
