Bengal: Congress protest at Asansol DM office turns violent, six named in FIR

Asansol, Oct 4 (UNI) A Congress protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar turned violent outside the West Burdwan district magistrate’s office in Asansol on Sunday, leaving several police personnel injured and prompting police to register a case against six named persons and around 200 unidentified protesters.
The trouble broke out when a group of demonstrators allegedly breached the security barricades and climbed onto the main gate of the district magistrate’s office while attempting to enter the administrative complex.
Police intervened to prevent them from entering, leading to a scuffle between the protesters and security personnel.
According to the complaint lodged by Sub-Inspector Mehboob Alam of the Jahangiri Mohalla Police Outpost, around 150 to 200 protesters had gathered near Gate No. 1, blocking the road and raising slogans.
Despite repeated requests to maintain peace, the protesters allegedly became aggressive and attempted to breach the boundary by scaling the main gate.
Police said several personnel were injured during the confrontation.
Among those injured were Sub-Inspectors Mehboob Alam, Atunu Bajpai and Shishir Kumar Ghosh, Constable Nirendranath Bhattacharya and other on-duty personnel.
They were taken to Asansol District Hospital for treatment.
The Asansol North police registered the FIR under several non-bailable sections relating to unlawful assembly, rioting, assault on police personnel and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties.
The six persons named in the FIR are former Asansol Municipal Corporation councillor SM Mustafa and residents Mohammad Azad, Mohammad Danish, Mohammad Khurshid, Kaustab and Manish Barnwal.
Police are examining video footage and photographs from the spot to identify the other protesters involved in the incident.
No arrests have been made so far.
Mustafa, however, denied the allegations of violence and accused the police of framing Congress workers in false cases.
He admitted that some activists had climbed the gate but claimed there was no physical confrontation with the police.
"While it is true that a few enthusiastic activists climbed the gate during our peaceful demonstration, there was absolutely no scuffle or physical altercation with the law enforcement officers," Mustafa said.
He alleged that Congress workers had faced similar political targeting under successive governments and said the party would continue with its scheduled programmes despite the police case.
