Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon warns of stern action over cruelty to snake

Siliguri, Oct 4 (UNI) West Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon on Sunday said that attacks on wildlife would not be tolerated and that stern action would be taken against those found violating the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The minister was referring to a video that had gone viral in which a departmental officer was allegedly seen handling a long snake in a cruel and improper manner.
In a video message on Sunday afternoon, Oraon said, “It is shameful that a departmental officer was handling the snake very badly. Such behaviour cannot be tolerated.”
“A preliminary investigation report has reached me. I have asked the authorities concerned to conduct a further investigation before taking stern action,” Oraon said.
He identified the officer as Rajib Mondal, Deputy Ranger, Bishnupur in Bankura district, and said the incident had occurred in March 2025.
“Some wildlife lovers sent me the video clip in which the departmental officer was seen badly handling the snake. It was pathetic. He will be punished for violation of the Wildlife Act,” the minister said.
Oraon also expressed concern over attacks on elephants, rhinos and deer, saying that the state government was working to reduce human-animal conflict.
“It is true that elephants sometimes eat standing crops, but that does not mean people can kill them by erecting live electric fencing. The law will take its own course and apply equally to all,” he said.
