Bengal: Gunfire, sickle attacks over land dispute leave 13 injured in Nadia

Krishnagar, Nov 1 (UNI) A land dispute over 12 bighas allegedly escalated into a violent clash, with two rounds of gunfire and attacks with sharp weapons and bamboo sticks leaving at least 13 people, including a woman, injured at Kaliyagandhi village under Hogalberia police station in West Bengal's Nadia district.
The injured were reportedly attacked by a group of men allegedly led by Ripon Mondal and Sagar Ali when a dispute erupted over the possession and cultivation of land belonging to two families, identified as those of Satyen Biswas and Natabar Biswas. The complainants alleged that the accused had been attempting to forcibly occupy the 12 bighas of land.
According to accounts given by the injured, the situation turned violent when the disputed land was being cultivated. Two rounds were allegedly fired, following which a group of around 10 to 15 men armed with bamboo sticks, lathis, sickles and other sharp weapons attacked those present.
Police, however, denied firing and said there was a clash between two families over a land dispute. During the clash, sharp weapons were used, a senior police officer said.
One of the injured, Sudeb Singh, however, alleged that the attackers opened fire when cultivation of the disputed land was almost complete.
He claimed that after the gunshots were fired, those present scattered, leaving several people vulnerable to the subsequent assault.
He named several persons, including Ripon, Sufal and others, as allegedly being involved in the attack.
Another injured person, Arindam Joardar, claimed that he was assaulted when he went to the spot to intervene and stop the fighting. Despite informing the attackers that he was a heart patient, he was allegedly struck four times.
The incident has triggered tension in the locality, with allegations of forcible land grabbing and violent intimidation raising concerns over the law and order situation.
