Bengal: Snake’s sudden appearance on highway triggers pile-up; 10 injured as bus hits container

Burdwan, Nov 1 (UNI) An attempt to save a venomous snake from being run over by a speeding vehicle triggered a chain collision on the Burdwan-Katwa state highway on Sunday morning, leaving at least 10 passengers injured.
The incident took place near Alinagar crossing under Bhatar police station when a container truck suddenly applied its brakes after its driver spotted a Russell's viper crossing the road.
A South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) bus travelling behind the container failed to stop in time and rammed into its rear.
The impact triggered a pile-up, with two cars following the bus also crashing into the vehicles ahead.
At least 10 passengers travelling on the bus sustained injuries.
With the help of locals, they were rescued from the damaged vehicle and rushed to Bhatar State General Hospital for treatment.
The condition of the injured was not immediately known.
According to police, the container was heading towards Burdwan when the driver spotted the snake slithering across the highway and braked abruptly to avoid running it over.
The sudden halt, however, left the vehicles following it with little time to react, resulting in the multiple-vehicle collision.
The incident also brought attention to the seasonal behaviour of snakes as winter approaches.
Shibaprasad Sinha, a retired Range Officer based in Katwa, said Russell's vipers and banded kraits are sometimes seen outside their hiding places during the morning hours to bask in the sun.
"Russell's vipers and banded kraits only come out in the morning to take a brief sunbath," he said.
Bhatar police reached the spot soon after the accident and took steps to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic movement.
Vehicular movement on the busy highway remained disrupted for some time following the collision.
