Bengal mulls hefty fines for dumping garbage in neighbourhoods

Kolkata, Sep 21 (UNI) After taking measures against spitting and urination in public places, the West Bengal authorities are now considering cracking down on people throwing waste in neighbourhoods to improve cleanliness and curb the dengue outbreak in the city.
The state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department is exploring options to penalise persons found randomly throwing garbage in neighbouring premises.
According to state UDMA Minister Agnimitra Paul, if garbage is found between the boundaries of two buildings, fines would be imposed on both structures.
“People are throwing garbage at the crossings of their localities instead of giving it to the safai karmis who are visiting houses,” said the minister. “If waste is noticed between the boundaries of two adjacent buildings, residents of both the structures would be fined. The penalties would not be limited to Rs 100 to Rs 200, but a heavier amount,” added Paul.
The minister also led a dengue awareness rally on Monday. The march was held in Ward No. 6 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Administrator and Municipal Commissioner of the KMC Smita Pandey and other civic representatives also participated in the rally this morning, which was held to create awareness among citizens.
