Bengal: NFR opens Rangapani-Bagdogra line in Siliguri for freight operations

Siliguri, Nov 1 (UNI) Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has opened the 6.8-km Rangapani-Bagdogra siding line in Siliguri for regular freight operations, eliminating the need for freight trains coming from East Central Railway (ECR) to reverse at Siliguri Junction and significantly improving operational efficiency.
The long-disused railway line, under Katihar Division, has been restored for freight movement with minimal expenditure, enabling the railway to make better use of its existing infrastructure and increase freight handling capacity.
The new arrangement will allow trains entering NFR at Forbesganj from ECR to proceed towards destinations beyond Barsoi without reversing at Siliguri Junction.
According to NFR, the elimination of reversal operations will save energy, reduce detention of freight trains and improve the utilisation of rolling stock. It will also reduce the requirement for additional crew and shunting staff involved in reversing trains.
The railway expects to receive at least 10 freight trains daily from ECR at Forbesganj for onward movement beyond Barsoi. The additional route will provide greater flexibility in freight operations and facilitate faster movement of goods.
The development is expected to benefit traders, businesses and consumers across the region by improving the reliability of freight transportation and strengthening supply chains.
It will also create opportunities for NFR to handle additional freight traffic and generate revenue through better utilisation of existing railway assets.
Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the line had been brought into regular freight operations through coordinated efforts and optimum utilisation of existing infrastructure.
“The initiative will enhance freight handling capacity and operational efficiency while ensuring better utilisation of railway resources,” Sharma said.
The project was completed under the guidance of NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, with the coordinated efforts of Katihar Division and the concerned departments.
