Bengal: Three arrested over BJP leader’s murder in Bolpur

Bolpur, Oct 4 (UNI) In a major breakthrough, the Birbhum district police have arrested three people in connection with the point-blank shooting of BJP Bolpur booth president Chandan Bhalla, with police suspecting a land dispute to be the motive behind the killing.
Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh has confirmed the arrest of Amirul Sheikh from the Kumarganj police station area of South Dinajpur district.
He was arrested from a hideout in the district.
Police had earlier arrested Sheikh Anarul and Dipankar Roy alias Tenu from Bolpur.
According to the preliminary investigation, the three arrested persons are suspected to be involved in the conspiracy behind the murder, committed on Sep 27 in the Tusrapatti area of Bolpur.
However, the alleged hired shooters who carried out the killing are still absconding.
"Prima facie, the investigation strongly points towards a dispute over land. We have secured three key conspirators and seized live ammunition during our raids. The hired shooters involved in the execution are still absconding," Bhundesh said.
He added that police had widened the search for the remaining suspects and would take steps to arrest them.
A forensic team has examined the crime scene and collected ballistic and other evidence.
The Special Investigation Team and the state Criminal Investigation Department have also joined the investigation.
Police are examining the source of the seized arms and analysing mobile phone data and other leads to trace the absconding suspects.
The murder has triggered political reactions in the area.
BJP Dubrajpur MLA Dhruba Saha and Sainthia MLA visited Bhalla's family and offered their condolences.
The district Congress has also announced that a job would be provided to a member of Bhalla's family to help support them following his death.
Security has been tightened in Bolpur and neighbouring areas, with police checkpoints put on alert as the investigation continues.
Notably, on the evening of September 27, Chandan Bhalla, who served as the BJP president for booth 201 and worked as a clerk at the local land registry office, was ambushed near the Motipukur Rice Mill area when two masked men on a motorcycle shot Bhalla directly in the head at point-blank range before fleeing the scene. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.
