Bengal: Tight security in place for Taki immersion on Ichhamati

Kolkata, Oct 20 (UNI) The Basirhat district police and local administration have put in place elaborate security arrangements for the immersion of Durga idols in the Ichhamati river at Taki on Wednesday, with particular emphasis on crowd management, India Bangladesh international border security and the prevention of accidents.
The heightened security measures come in the wake of the recent fatal incident at Chorbagan in Kolkata, prompting the police to adopt a more stringent approach to crowd control and public safety during the immersion festivities.
The annual immersion on the Ichhamati, which flows along the international border between India and Bangladesh, draws large crowds of visitors. The unique tradition, in which boats carrying idols from both countries converge on the river, makes security and the maintenance of the international boundary particularly important.
Basirhat SP Alaknanda Bhowal and other senior police officials have inspected the area to assess the security arrangements and ensure that all necessary measures are in place before the immersion begins.
Following a joint meeting of senior officials of the district administration and Basirhat district police, a multi-layered security plan has been drawn up for the riverfront, immersion ghats and adjoining roads.
The police are coordinating with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh's Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to prevent boats or individuals from crossing the international boundary during the immersion. A rope boundary or floating barrier has been arranged along the river to ensure that boats carrying idols remain within their respective designated areas.
Additional police personnel, including members of the state police's special force, will be deployed at major immersion points along the Ichhamati, particularly Taki Rajbari Ghat and other ghats in Taki and the adjoining Hasnabad area.
CCTV cameras and drones will be used to monitor crowds and surrounding roads. Police control rooms will maintain surveillance to prevent pickpocketing, unauthorised movement and other untoward incidents. Lots of people from many places have already come to Taki's international border for the "Bhasan." The police said that all hotels and guest houses are packed."
Special traffic arrangements have been made for Taki and Hasnabad to regulate the movement of visitors' vehicles and vehicles carrying idols. Traffic on selected roads may be temporarily restricted or diverted to prevent congestion around the immersion points.
Civil Defence personnel, disaster management teams and a specialised water police unit equipped with speedboats will remain on standby to respond to emergencies. Medical camps and ambulances will also be available near the ghats to provide immediate assistance if required.
Meanwhile, the Taki Basirhat Municipality Citizens' Forum has urged the administration to ensure that the festivities remain environmentally responsible.
Advocate Pranab Sarkar of the forum said the administration had been requested to install an adequate number of dustbins and ensure that loudspeakers were not operated at excessively high decibel levels.
The immersion of the idol from Taki Rajbari will remain a major attraction. Upholding its age-old tradition, the royal family's idol will be carried on the shoulders of 24 bearers to the immersion ghat, without the use of a vehicle.
The administration is hopeful that the coordinated deployment of police personnel, border forces and emergency services will ensure that the historic immersion passes off peacefully. UNI RC SS
