Manipur Police arrest 3 suspects, recover 12 firearms amid 48-hour strike

Imphal, Oct 20 (UNI) Intensifying the joint search and intelligence-based operations following recent violence in the state, Manipur Police and Central security forces have arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged deadly attack at Sunurok Hill in which three Meitei villagers were killed by armed Kuki militants and recovered 12 firearms, 1,095 live rounds of ammunition, explosives and other items.
The developments come amid a 48-hour strike that began last night, adding to tensions in the state following the violence on October 18 and 19, which claimed three lives and left three others injured. The strike has further heightened concerns over the prevailing security situation.
Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Police Headquarters today Lhari Dorje, ADGP (Law and Order/Intelligence), said that three persons had been arrested in connection with the Sunurok Hill attack. According to the preliminary investigation, two of the arrested persons reportedly admitted to being part of the assault team. Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the incident.
Based on disclosures made by the accused, security forces recovered a range of weapons, including an INSAS rifle, an M16 rifle, an A1 rifle, an AK-47-type rifle, a 7.62 mm sniper rifle, a Heckler & Koch 5.56 mm rifle, three 12-bore single-barrel guns, a lethod gun and a handmade rocket launcher, among other items. The total recovery was reported to include 12 firearms, 1,095 live rounds of various calibres and explosives.
In a separate operation conducted near Sinai Camp today, security forces detained 17 individuals for verification at a designated Suspension of Operations (SoO) camp. Their identities reportedly did not match the listed cadres of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the Kuki National Army (KLA) associated with the camp. Authorities are also investigating reports of missing ammunition and magazines.
Dorje further stated that senior officers of the Manipur Police and combined security forces had conducted helicopter surveillance as part of the ongoing operations.
Meanwhile, in connection with the Khangabok-Sangaiyumpham case, a joint team comprising Thoubal Police and Central security personnel searched around 146 houses and verified more than 300 individuals in the Sangaiyumpham-Cherapur area. Four suspects were detained, of whom two have been formally arrested. A double-barrel gun was also seized and sent for forensic examination, the ADGP said. A youth, identified as Rakesh, was shot dead by villagers from a neighbouring village. As the incident occurred between villagers of Meitei and Pangal (Muslim) prohibitory orders were imposed.
Manipur Police appealed to the public to remain calm, refrain from taking the law into their own hands and avoid circulating unverified information and rumours on social media. People were also urged to cooperate with security forces and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or the Central Control Room.
The Native People Committee Manipur (NPCM) had called for the 48-hour strike from midnight on Monday to protest against the killing of the three villagers. The group is also pushing for tighter security, removal of unauthorised camps near the Khongbal Tangkhul foothills, and a thorough investigation into the murders.
Members of the committee blocked roads and staged protests in the state. Effigies of the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, the Home Minister and a Rajya Sabha MP were also burnt in protest.
