Bengal: Trinamool leader arrested for allegedly duping job aspirant of Rs 10 lakh

Midnapore, Oct 30 (UNI) A Trinamool Congress leader was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly cheating a job aspirant of Rs 10 lakh by promising him a permanent government job in the West Bengal Forest Department, exploiting his political influence and purported proximity to senior government officials.
The arrested leader, Ajit Mahato, was picked up by Jhargram police from his residence following a complaint lodged by Sajal Das, a resident of Bachurdoba in Jhargram. He is scheduled to be produced before a court on Friday.
According to the complaint, Mahato allegedly assured Das that he could secure him a permanent appointment in the Forest Department by using his political connections and links with senior state government officials. Trusting the assurance, Das allegedly paid him Rs 10 lakh in four instalments between December 2024 and March 2026.
However, despite the payment, the promised job never materialised. When Das subsequently demanded the return of his money, Mahato allegedly refused to pay him back and threatened him with dire consequences, the complainant claimed.
The complaint further alleged that Mahato demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh from Das when he sought a refund of the amount already paid.
More disturbingly, the complainant claimed that Mahato had allegedly adopted a similar modus operandi to extract money from several unemployed youths by dangling the prospect of government employment.
Police launched an investigation following the complaint and arrested the Trinamool leader from his residence late on Thursday night. Investigators are now probing whether other individuals were involved in the alleged job racket and whether more unemployed youths were similarly duped.
The arrest has brought the alleged use of political influence to lure job seekers into focus, particularly against the backdrop of mounting concerns over employment fraud involving promises of government appointments.
